Primal Pantry Cafe

Primal Pantry Cafe

I remember when I first gave up gluten, dairy and sugar, I was anxious about dining out at cafes and restaurants. I had a lot of questions.  Will I be able to order something that is gluten free, dairy free and sugar free off the menu? Will I be able to create something from the menu that will suit me without resulting in too much inconvenience for the waitstaff and chefs? Will the meal I order contain hidden sugars? Will I be able to eat something tasty that won’t give me a headache, a migraine or a sore tummy? Thankfully, after a couple of years of eating out, I have been able to find a group of cafes and restaurants in Brisbane where I have confidence ordering a meal that is free from gluten, dairy and sugar.  Primal Pantry is one of these establishments.

Primal Pantry is a paleo cafe that is located on the corner of Florence and Macquarie Streets in Tenneriffe, Brisbane. They are open from 6:30am to 4pm seven days a week. They offer beautiful breakfasts, lunches, ready made salads, sweet treats, great coffee and smoothies. If you want to check them out, visit their website here. Their website is a great resource.  You can look at their latest menu, learn more about the paleo lifestyle and discover some of the recipes they use in the cafe. If you follow Primal Pantry on Facebook you will be kept up to date with the latest treats and meals they are making. I love looking at the Primal Pantry posts to check out the latest goodies they are creating.

I have been eating at Primal Pantry for a while now. Every time I go there, I find something beautiful to eat. As Primal Pantry is a paleo cafe, there is no gluten and no sugar in their meals and treats.  They use maple syrup, honey and dates. Primal Pantry is also mostly dairy free. Some of their ready made treats (e.g. protein balls) contain whey protein powder (derived from dairy), but this is very clearly labelled in the display cabinet. You can also order coffee on cow’s milk. The staff are so friendly and I feel really comfortable asking them questions about what products are in their meals. Primal Pantry is also kid friendly. There’s a little kids nook inside and the boys know to visit this first thing to grab some pencils and colouring books to amuse themselves while we wait for our meals.

Primal Pantry is also a paleo grocer.  There’s a great little section inside with some of the paleo products they use for sale. You can grab coconut oil, coconut water, honey, fruits and vegetables, paleo muesli and cacao products, to name a few. It’s really handy if you happen to be running low on one of your pantry items.

I have only ever had beautiful meals at Primal Pantry.  Their breakfasts and lunches are delicious and there are options for vegans, vegetarians and carnivores.  There really is something for everyone.  They also have a great kids menu that extends to kid-sized smoothies. My boys love eating here and get quite excited when we go here.

I took my boys there for breakfast last week. I had the Paleo Toast – poached egg, paleo bread, avocado and home made basil mayonnaise.  The basil mayonnaise is amazing! The kids had the children’s Bacon, Eggs and Toast.  This is a poached egg, gluten free bacon, home made paleo toast and a homemade tomato sauce (which is a little on the spicy side). I had the most delicious decaf flat white made on coconut milk and the boys enjoyed a kid-sized Monkey Fuel Smoothie each (just blended banana, almond milk, cinnamon and nutmeg).

Can I say, if you haven’t yet tried coffee made with coconut milk, give it a go!  It is amazingly creamy and so delicious.  Primal Pantry make the most wonderful coffee on coconut milk. It’s a great place to try this as very few cafes make coffee on coconut milk.

If you go for a visit, make sure you try something sweet out of the display cabinet.  There are heaps of options to choose from.  Chocolate caramel slice, lemon curd tart, protein balls, berry chocolate balls, chocolate brownie, carrot cake and lots more. They also do takeaway, so it’s nice to take something sweet home to nibble on later on.

All in all this is a great cafe.  They are a little bit on the pricey side, but I don’t mind paying a little extra for the reassurance that I can order a meal that is kind to my body and that tastes fantastic.  Love your work Primal Pantry!
